May's VBC Selection is:

The Shack By William P. Young

Synopsis

Mackenzie Allen Philips’ youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever.

I am kinda of excited because we are from (very near anyway) the area where the book takes place. Despite the what it is about, it is fun to have a book that takes place in eastern oregon!

Have you gotten your book yet??!

Sarah said...

no, dangit!! The lady at the library said that it would be in any day and I'm still waiting. I think I'll call her tomorrow and whine..

Are you already done?

Ok so I had such a bad headache all last week I couldn't get more than 2 pages in at a time. But Thursday I read a little and then lastnight I dove in! I'm getting ready to start chapter 8 here in a few minutes.

It's sorta weird, but I'm liking it. Just as I'm thinking..uhh..I'm so done with this long winded conversation that makes hardly any sense and just seems juvenile, Papa turns it and then it makes perfect sense..most of the time. So, I think I really like the book.

But, with reading fiction for the first time in our book club..I find myself longing for a Non Fiction book. But, at the same time I'm dying to read James Frey's new book..so maybe I'll stick to fiction for awhile longer!

My favorite bit of conversation was at the end of chapter 7.

"Jesus?" he whispered as his voice choked. "I feel so lost."
A hand reached out and squeezed his, and didn't let go.
"I know, Mack. But it's not true. I am with you and I'm not lost. I'm sorry if it feels that way, but hear me clearly. You are not lost."

P.S. - I AM really enjoying his vivid descriptions of things. I can totally feel myself right there in the midst of what he's revealing.

Also, I too enjoy how it is set in a place that is so close to where I live! I think it makes it even more real for me..which wasn't so comforting in chapters 3-5! I told Chris lastnight..uhh..maybe we SHOULDN'T go camping this year afterall! ;)

oops I meant chapters 3 & 4

OK I finished the book yesterday. I really liked it! It was so interesting. There were I think 5 quotes that I wrote down in my planner, I just loved them. A lot of insight in the book. Some things I'm not too sure about, but most of it was great. I hope lots of lives are changed from reading it.

Ok, I am sooo sorry I have been neglecting blog world...was planning my daughters birthday and I got overwhelmingly busy!
I loved this book to, it was so different and took me a while to buy into some of the descriptions. When they portrayed Papa as a women at first, etc., that was tough to handle, but I think that was the whole point. The author did such a great job of stirring my emotions. What did you think of the part where he goes to "judgement" and is told to make the choice of which child has to die? That KILLED me.
There were some parts I'm not to sure about either, but it IS fiction and VERY thought provoking!

Long winded I know, sorry about being neglectful!!!!

That's so funny I kept having to remind myself of that, too.. "it IS fiction" Although based on biblical truth..a mans perceptions are not God's truths at all times.

Anyway..the judgement part was pretty intense, I agree!

Hope your daughters bday party went well!!

P.S. Are you on myspace?? I can't find you!

Sarah said...

oh, haha, that last comment about myspace was directed towards Kailin..I assume we are the only ones reading this book but thought I should clarify ;)

Kailin said...

No myspace...all of my friends are either on blogger or facebook, so I would be a lonely sole in the myspace world I think. We are at wells5.blogspot.com

Yeah, I think we are the only two on this book...I have a pretty bad reading addiction!

If you are thinking nonfiction anytime soon, here is a suggestion: Memoirs of a boy soldier. I havent read it yet but it has been sitting on my bookshelf for the past 5 months and I am thinking of diving in pretty soon (after we move in 1.5 weeks)
Just a thought...

Hey, great minds think alike! I keep seeing that book when I go to Target and the cover grabs me everytime. Let's do it! I'll post it on or near the first.

We're gonna have to find a happy light hearted book soon! I think you and I are the only ones who "get off" on this deep stuff ;)
