The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan

Synopsis

"The Middle Place is about calling home. Instinctively. Even when all the paperwork—a marriage license, a notarized deed, two birth certificates, and seven years of tax returns—clearly indicates you're an adult, but all the same, there you are, clutching the phone and thanking God that you're still somebody's daughter."

For Kelly Corrigan, family is everything.

At thirty-six, she had a marriage that worked, a couple of funny, active kids, and a weekly newspaper column. But even as a thriving adult, Kelly still saw herself as George Corrigan's daughter. A garrulous Irish-American charmer from Baltimore, George was the center of the ebullient, raucous Corrigan clan. He greeted every day by opening his bedroom window and shouting, "Hello, World!" Suffice it to say, Kelly's was a colorful childhood, just the sort a girl could get attached to.

Kelly lives deep within what she calls the Middle Place—"that sliver of time when parenthood and childhood overlap"—comfortably wedged between her adult duties and her parents' care. But she's abruptly shoved into a coming-of-age when she finds a lump in her breast—and gets the diagnosis no one wants to hear. And so Kelly's journey to full-blown adulthood begins. When George, too, learns he has late-stage cancer, it is Kelly's turn to take care of the man who had always taken care of her—and show us a woman as she finally takes the leap and grows up.

Kelly Corrigan is a natural-born storyteller, a gift you quickly recognize as her father's legacy, and her stories are rich with everyday details. She captures the beat of an ordinary life and the tender, sometimes fractious moments that bind families together. Rueful and honest, Kelly is the prized friend who will tell you her darkest, lowest, screwiest thoughts, and then later, dance on the coffee table at your party.

Funny, yet heart-wrenching, The Middle Place is about being a parent and a child at the same time. It is about the special double-vision you get when you are standing with one foot in each place. It is about the family you make and the family you came from—and locating, navigating, and finally celebrating the place where they meet. It is about reaching for life with both hands—and finding it.

Im officially "IN" and I’m speechless, really!

I’m not sure who does or does not know this, but I currently work at St. Lukes (MSTI) and I work in the Chemo Infusion Room. I have been impacted by the lives of cancer patients for about a year now, and Im daily inspired by their grace, perseverance and love. I can genuinely relate to Kelly and what she is going through.

I also received a scary diagnosis (Pulmonary Hypertension) and have been challenged with a lot of the same emotions. I loved when Kelly was getting her mammogram, and WANTED to hear that she had cancer. She felt inclined to step up to the challenge and prove to people she could get through it. But then of course she prayed nobody heard her mind say those words, because REALLY, she would never wish such a thing.

My disease is familiar in that there is NOT a cure, and there are only therapies to control it. I am always so “at home” when I’m at work. I am inspired by amazing people that challenge the diagnosis and become a stronger human being, one living their life to the fullest and finding peace and happiness within their, "diagnosed" life.

Sarah said...

I've had 2 scares myself, both were fixed in time..but in those first moments you have so many thoughts..indescribable pain. I can't imagine, truly, what Kelly or Katie have and are going through. I tell you I can forget the pain of childbirth, but I can instantly remember and feel the pain I felt when my doctor looked at me "that way".

I want to go back and finish the book right now but I'm forcing myself to stop..long day tomorrow.

How far into it are you, Katie?

Katie! said...

I just have to add this, as it's so intereting and good to know...

*1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

*1 in 2 women over the age of 40 will be diagnosed with heart disease.

Come on ladies, lets live a healthy lifestyle, eat and exercise regularly!

Just finished..1:14am..boy will I regret that decision in a few short hours when my man lovingly tells me it's time to get up.

My eyes hurt..heads following suit.

Restless leg crap is pulsating through my whole body..arms are now restless as well.

Book was so great. I wish she would have found faith..it's interesting, though, to see how one gets through such a life altering event without faith..or so she says. ;)

I want to know what happened with her Dad..

Okay, so I'm on chapter 12 right now. I feel so left in the dust! Anyways, I'm trekking along and loving the story so far. I just have one question. Why is the character in the book Kelly Corrigan? It's not really about Kelly Corrigan the author is it? This is fiction? Please help.

Are we ready for the next selection? Or do we need to have some discussions about this book? What's the status ladies? I have a suggestion for the next book(s). It's a series of 9 books. A friend of mine read them and she said they were fab. Very easy, happy and inspirational. The Mitford's or something... Check it out.

http://www.amazon.com/At-Home-Mitford-Years-Book/dp/1589190629/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206327315&sr=1-2

Sarah said...

My Mom read and was obsessed with the Mitford series. I didn't get to talk to her hardly for weeks b/c everytime I called she was too busy reading!!

I think we are reading Beautiful Boy or The Shack next. Haven't talked to your lovely sister about the final decision yet. I have Beautiful Boy on the way to my house, in fact I should have gotten it today! GRR Mailman's probably reading it.

So, are you done with the book? What did you think!!

Sarah said...

OH, and I was thinkin maybe we'd do one book selection/month. So we'll probably start the next one in April? Just another thing I have to talk to Katie about ;)

I guess you could say I'm liking the book. I am a bit depressed with all the cancer talk. I'm over half way through and right now, Greenie is going through cancer again so ya, I'm a bit depressed about it. But the story is catchy and I'm into it. I am looking forward to it being over though....I'd give it a 6 so far.....hummmm

The Mitford Series is cool, but addictive as hell!

I'm in favor of the martinis with the author night...count me in!

Sarah, thanks again for organizing this blog and getting us all started.

I really liked the book - read it in two days, but I'm a freak.

I liked Kelly a lot and related a whole lot to her family - the tightness, the togetherness, the craziness! I laughed and I cried along with her and even when she was depressed, she didn't ask for any pity - I really liked that.

I loved the writing style - going back and forth between past and present. It brought back lots of memories - good and bad!

I liked that the cancer stuff didn't get to technical, although I must say having gone through some rough shit with my mom, you DO get to where the jargon just spouts out of you! I also liked the scepticism of Kelly about the docs - sometimes they need to know the patient/family knows stuff too!

My mom's chemo team was great - they fostered a real group to support each other and the patients. She still talks about that.
Anyway, the book was great and I'll be quoting it for some time.

Thanks again for organizing this Sarah!

Barbara

Really? I didn't find the cancer talk depressing..well no more than it should be I suppose. It's a horrible ordeal for everyone included. But, I just loved the way she dealt with it. I found a lot of inspiration in that.

I guess I was a bit harsh with my previous comment. I also liked Kelly. Alot. She was very spunky and easy to relate to. Seems like someone I'd want to be friends with. I appreciate her honesty, wit and humor through her ordeal. Maybe I'm a bit sheltered with the whole cancer thing not ever knowing anyone who has gone trough it (Thank God). I may have been able to relate a bit more if I had. Overall, I liked the book. I don't think I'd read it over again, but I would suggest it to someone who wants a fast, easy and heartfelt read. Thanks to Kelly for allowing us see inside her heart, home and life.
PS Did anyone else see a bit of Jim Carey in Greenie? "Lovely! She's a STAR!"
Amy

Chris said...

Hi, Lovey! :)

I totally agree..I would never read it again..it's a great book though. I have to say, I wouldn't probably read any of the books I've read in my life again! With exception of The Bible and The Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers..those 2 I could read forever!

Greenie was so great! He was like every 1950's tv show dad..I just adored him. Do we know if he died or not with his last known battle with cancer? Should we email Kelly and ask her?

Katie! said...

Ok, so is this Chris as in Chris Mendiola? As in Sarah's husband? And did he really read this book? And did he really say "i just adored him!"?

What's your secret Sarah? Um, do you want to trade husbands? Even for a couple of minutes? If only i could get Brady to READ a book!

LUCKYYYYYY!

Katie! said...

I emailed Kelly! If you have any questions get to posting!

Chris said...

LOL!!!! No, I'm on Chris' laptop, so it shows up as him instead of me for some reason. HAHAHAHAHA

The only question I have for her is, can we come have a night of singing and wine and laughter with them? And, is her Dad ok?

Barbara said...

Gotta go with Sarah's questions, please.
And as one who HAD a 50s dad - mine was nothing like Greenie! But, that kind of support - even when it seems a bit unrealistic - is what I think really gave Kelly the will to just get 'er done, ya know?
Also, I think even though Kelly doesn't look at what she has as 'faith' that's what it is... just looks different for her, like it does for all of us, hmmm?

Barbara

Kailin said...

I loved this book! I would love to know more about Greenie and how he is.
I cannot tell you how much I can relate to her relationship to her mom!

Sarah said...

By the way..I now start almost every morning by throwing open my curtains and opening my blinds and saying, "Hello world!!" :)

Bob and Vicki Mundy said...

I finally figured out how to get here. Not exactly a brain trust with the computer. Regardless, am really enjoying this book. Her relationship with her dad reminds of me on mine with my dad. The distance she experiences with her ma is sad. I also had that type of interchange with my mother. Fortunately, prior to her death, we were able to come to terms. We overlooked our faults and baggage and embraced and respected our differences. She just didn't know how to love me nor I her. But we did love each other. I didn't cry about her death for 1/1/2 yrs afterwards. One night, listening to an Amy Grant song, I burst into tears. Something in the lyrics touched my heart. I was making a quilt for Sarah and it hit me that if it hadn't been for my mom, I wouldn't know how to make the quilt for my lovely daughter. Thank you, Mom, for teaching me how to demonstrate love, and thank you, Dad, for teaching me how to feel love. Thank you, Sarah, for being the very best daughter a mother could ask for. I'm blessed.

Sarah said...

Now you've got ME crying! THanks :)

I miss Gramma, too :( And Grampa. One day we'll all be together again.
